Yorkies / Yorkshire Terriers for Sale & Adoption
Yorkies are very popular small dogs all over the world and especially in the United States. They're affectionate and loving and small enough to carry around in your arms all day long. They also love sitting on warm laps too, so be sure you've got the patience and availability of said lap. These dogs were originally bred to catch rats, but are primarily bred as companion pets today. The Yorkshire Terrier is known as the boss, being bold and independent and even feisty. They do bond strongly with their masters though and have been known to be protective at times. Yorkies are somewhat less allergic than many of their canine counterparts due to their growing hair as opposed fur.
Continue reading to learn more about Yorkshire Terriers, a toy sized terrier that's widely known as the Yorkie.
Popularity: Very popular.
Trainability: Typical of other small dogs, the Yorkie is difficult to housebreak. When it comes to obedience training and teaching your dog tricks, the Yorkshire Terrier is definitely capable of fast learning. This is an intelligent dog that's also independent and sometimes stubborn, so be sure to persist with your training efforts. You'll need to be patient and consistent, but eventually you'll have your Yorkie in fine shape, doing tricks and behaving well.
Size/Weight: Small sized dogs, weighing in at an average of 4-7 pounds.
Origin Location/Date: The Yorkshire Terrier was originally bred in Yorkshire, England and was used as a rat hunter. The Yorkie was introduced to the United States in 1872 and was recognized as a breed by the American Kennel Club in 1978. It's a wildly popular dog today.
Energy Level: Believe it or not, the Yorkie is a very active dog. It loves to go for walks and to interact with other dogs and many types of humans. This breed is a social one that enjoys playtime indoors as well as running around outdoors. Because of its small size though, a small amount of exercise goes a long way.
Temperament: Yorkies are fun dogs to be around. They're generally friendly and are great family pets. Watch them around small children and other dogs though because they may get hurt. These dogs are tiny. Yorkies are wonderful companions and love to play. They're also good watch dogs and they'll bark when they suspect something is amiss. Be careful though, Yorkies haven't quite gotten the message that they are so small and may act as if they're actually larger dogs when confronted. Many people find this appealing and cute.
Necessary Space: Because the Yorkie is so small, apartment living is fine. This breed will get much of its required exercise indoors, but will also need to go on its daily walk to interact socially.
Talents: A large dog in a small dog's body, the Yorkshire Terrier has a huge personality. This is a wonderful companion dog that's spunky and smart and great with other household pets.
Life Expectancy: 11-15 years.
Group: Toy Group.
