Boxers for Sale & Adoption
If you're looking for a happy and energetic dog, the Boxer may be just what you seek. You know this breed by its distinct appearance; its short snout with its large underbite. The jaw protrudes from the bottom of the face to give them that look everyone knows all too well. They've also got long tongues that are bound to lick you once or twice - or for their entire lives. It's tough to stop Boxers from licking people. They love doing it. Boxers were first bred in Europe - Germany to be exact - but are now quite popular worldwide, especially in the United States. Like so many other dogs of this type, Boxers need to be both mentally and physically stimulated throughout their entire lives, from puppyhood well into adulthood. They get bored easily and need tasks and challenges to keep them occupied, lest they get themselves into trouble. They also appreciate long walks and runs and exercise in general. Overall, this breed gets along very well with humans, including children. They also love being around other animals and play well with just about anything.
Continue reading to learn more about Boxers, an extremely popular and friendly family dog.
Popularity: Very popular.
Trainability: Boxers are very eager to please, so training them tends to be on the easier side of things. Be warned though; boxers are very energetic and intelligent and being so, they tend to get bored quite easily. You'll need to keep them focused and entertained if you would like their training to be successful. These dogs are wonderful support and therapy animals and are great with obedience, agility and herding.
Size/Weight: Medium sized dogs, weighing in at an average of 55-70 pounds.
Origin Location/Date: The Boxer dog we see today was first bred in Germany in the late 1800s. Although there were many incarnations of this dog between a few different breeds throughout history, the modern Boxer was first bred by a man named George Alt who lived in Munich. The American Kennel Club first registered the Boxer breed in 1904, but the dog didn't become wildly popular like it is today in the United States until the 1940s and 1950s.
Energy Level: Boxer puppies and dogs are high energy and are dogs that will keep you occupied on a daily basis. You'll need to exercise this breed for at least an hour a day in the form of a fast walk, a run or extensive play in the park or a fenced in back yard.
Temperament: Boxers are friendly dogs and are great with kids and families. While they get along fairly well with other dogs and cats, you need to keep an eye on them when they're around other Boxers or dogs of the same sex. Also, they can get aggressive around dogs they don't know, so watch out for that as well. Train and socialize them early on during puppyhood. These dogs are also great watch and guard dogs, which can be a good or bad thing.
Necessary Space: You'll need room for your Boxer to run around and play inside and outside, so space is a necessity. These medium sized dogs aren't great in small apartments, so keep them only in larger houses with yards in which to run.
Talents: Wonderful and friendly family pets and guard dogs.
Life Expectancy: 10-12 years.
Group: Working group.
A few terms and phrases to describe the typical Boxer puppy and dog: fun, friendly, intelligent, can get bored easily, good guard dog, good watch dog, energetic, needs exercise daily, needs mental stimulation, can escape from fenced in yards, trainable, eager to please, strong and muscular.
