Origin Location/Date: The Dachshund was first bred in the 1500s in Germany and used as hunting dogs. They used to hunt badgers and fox. It was formally recognized as a breed by the American Kennel Club in 1885 and the Dachshund Club of America was created in the 1880s.

Energy Level: Dachshunds aren't the most energetic dogs on the planet, but they're not the least energetic either. They require at least two good walks a day to stave off becoming overweight as well as to build strong muscles. Due to this dog's elongated back, there needs to be enough muscle mass to support the body. It's important to note that the Dachshund shouldn't be allowed to jump off the couch or run up and down stairs because of risk of injury. This breed enjoys playing in the back yard and walking in the park, but will primarily enjoy being inside with its owners the most.

Temperament: The Dachshund is a big dog in a little dog's body. It's courageous, bold and outgoing. It may initially be shy around those it doesn't know and simply bark or it may actually become aggressive around strangers. This dog does bond well with its family though. Be cautious with Dachshunds around young children because the dog may bark or nip at the child if its not familiar. This dog loves receiving attention and it regularly seeks adventure. Necessary Space: This is a small dog that's wildly popular with those who live in urban settings. It's a good dog to own if you live in an apartment as it will do well exercise-wise by going for daily walks. Be warned though, Dachshunds have been known to bark, so if you have neighbors nearby, you may want to avoid this dog.

Talents: Dachshunds are excellent hunters of small burrowing prey where the dog can track down the animal and follow it into its burrow. It's also a very affectionate dog with those it knows well. It's spunky, energetic and exciting.
