The Bichon Frise, or otherwise known as the curly lap dog, is a definite crowd favorite. These little white dogs were once wildly popular in the circus but are much more widely used as family pets these days. Luckily, they still retain their trick learning abilities and families across the United States and abroad have no trouble training them to entertain. These guys are lively, affectionate, friendly, entertaining, funny, sweet, and are loyal to a fault. Also, if you have dog allergies, you may fair a bit better with this breed. They've been known to not affect humans who suffer from allergies as bad as some other breeds do. The Bichon Frise is a non-shedding dog. Interestingly, these dogs grow hair as opposed to fur. Trainability: Due to its intelligence, the Bichon Frise puppy or adult dog is fairly simple to train. It can learn tricks and is fairly eager to please. It is important to start early in puppyhood with socialization because you want this dog to be as friendly and used to people as possible in adulthood.

Origin Location/Date: The Bichon is a descendant of the Mediterranean breed called the Barbet. The breed goes all the way back to the 1300s in the Canary Islands and was kept as a pet by the upper class in France and Italy. They became increasingly popular in the United States in the 1950s.

Energy Level: Even though it's small, this breed is surely active. The Bichon Frise needs lots of daily play as well as walks on a leash. If you have a back yard, even better. It will enjoy running around outside and playing games inside. Be warned though, this dog likes to spontaneously run around both inside and outside like crazy while barking and even growling. It's quite entertaining to watch.

Necessary Space: Since this breed of dog is quite small, apartment living is just fine. While the Bichon does love exercise, it can get a lot of what it needs indoors. Of course, you'll need to walk it daily, but that's a given with any dog.
