Popularity: Very popular;

Trainability: When training the Pomeranian, start early on in puppyhood. Some of the first things you want to teach this dog is how to walk on a leash as well as how to come when called. After that, you can begin working on a variety of canine activities, such as agility, rally, obedience, work, and how to effectively become a therapy dog. Poms are intelligent, so they're able to be trained. You'll just need to be patient and consistent with them. Also, these dogs are notoriously challenging to housebreak, so make sure you're consistent and patient in that regard as well;

Size/Weight: Small sized dogs, weighing in at an average of 3-7 pounds;

Origin Location/Date: Pomeranians were first bred in Northern Europe, near the Baltic Sea. Their descendants weighed as much as 30 pounds, but were eventually bred down to today's Pom. After becoming popular in Italy, this breed became a sensation in Great Britain and then the United States. Today, it's one of the most popular dogs in the world. The Pomeranian was recognized as a breed by the American Kennel Club in 1900;

Energy Level: While Poms are energetic dogs and do need exercise, they'll likely get most of what they need by running around and playing inside the home. They'll require their daily walks as well, but be sure to stimulate them and play with them as long as they're interested;

Temperament: This is an intelligent and outgoing dog breed. It's small enough to bring on trips with you and it'll likely be a hit wherever it goes. The Pomeranian loves attention. The problem is, because this dog is so small and light, it can get easily injured. Keep the dog away from small children that don't know the difference between light play and play that may be too rough. Older children who know the difference are best. These dogs do have a tendency to bark as well, so be sure to deal with that when training them when they're young. This is a dog breed that suffers from Small Dog Syndrome, so be sure to keep an eye on it and make sure it doesn't pick too many fights with dogs that weigh 10 times its own weight. Overall, this is a great family dog. It's loving, fun to be around and entertaining;

Necessary Space: Because of the tiny size of this dog and its light exercise requirements, it would be an ideal candidate for apartment living;

Talents: The real value of the Pomeranian is its tiny size and ability to do tricks. This dog is easily trainable and can keep you entertained for hours. And since they're so alert, they'll make a wonderful watchdog;

Life Expectancy: 12-16 years;

Group: Toy Group;

A few terms and phrases to describe the typical Pomeranian puppy and dog: tiny, alert, intelligent, easily trained, good watchdogs, good for families, good with kids, active, learn tricks, funny, companionable, and loving.
