German Shorthaired Pointers for Sale & Adoption

German Shorthaired Pointers are awesome dogs. They're extraordinarily popular here in the United States and for very good reason. These dogs are enthusiastic and have fire in their eyes. They're very friendly and love to play or work all day long. They're powerful, fast, quite agile, and have incredible endurance. This doesn't mean they're perfect by any means though. GSPs, because of their hunting instincts and independence, can be stubborn and tough to train for those who don't have sufficient experience. For those who do have the experience and knowledge though, these dogs are very trainable and make wonderful pets. They form a strong bond between themselves and their families and are always up for a good time. Take them running, swimming, hunting, or anything else and you'll be met with exuberance and excitement. These are the perfect companion dogs for the outdoor lover.

Continue reading to learn more about German Shorthaired Pointers, otherwise known as the "GSP" and a mix between the Spanish Pointer, Foxhound, Italian Pointer, and Hannover Hound.

Popularity: Extremely popular.

Trainability: This breed can be trained, but it's not an easy chore. The reason for this is because the German Shorthaired Pointer is an energetic dog that's primarily motivated by chasing things. It's got seemingly unlimited energy, so it's best to start off in puppyhood with teaching simple commands, leash training and housebreaking. As the dog gets older, continue the training to tackle continued socialization and hunting skills. This is definitely not the dog for a first time dog owner or someone who has limited training skills or who may not be around the dog a substantial amount of time every day. When training, be assertive and firm, yet fair and friendly. A bond will form between you and the dog and you don't want to damage that relationship by being mean or cruel. Lots of positive reinforcement as well as using treats to reward good behavior are in order. It's also imperative to teach this breed of dog how to act around kids, adults, visitors to the home and around other pets. Since this dog is so instinctually driven to chase prey, it's not a good dog to own if you have other smaller pets in the home, such as cats, ferrets, ect... That's not a good combination. Overall, this is a great dog if trained by a professional and if you've got experience with dogs and lots of time on your hands. If not, choose another breed.

Size/Weight: Medium sized dogs, weighing in at an average of 55-70 pounds.

Origin Location/Date: The German Shorthaired Pointer was first bred in Germany during the mid 1800s as a hunting dog. It's a mix between various other dogs (as mentioned above) that were astute at hunting and chasing and retrieving prey. Another purpose of this breed of dog was to display at dog shows. Today, it's recognized by the American Kennel Club and is highly popular across the United States and is only getting more popular every year.

Energy Level: The German Shorthaired Pointer was bred for hunting and working and as such, has a boundless amount of energy. Translated, this means that this dog needs to be exercised frequently and regularly. It's recommended that you walk and run this breed daily and bring it along on hikes and camping trips. Basically, anything that will burn off some of the dog's reserved and very apparent energy. Just don't forget or neglect this duty or you'll pay for it in a variety of ways, such as a sad and unhealthy dog and furniture that's been destroyed.

Temperament: When trained well, the German Shorthaired Pointer is a friendly family dog that gets along well with children. Although, it's important to note that this dog is quite boisterous and can injure small kids, so it's best to keep the two apart until the child gets older and larger. This breed also gets along well with other dogs as long as they're large enough not to be chased. Keep this dog away from cats and other small pets. It's claimed that you can train the prey instinct from this dog if done so early, but that's an unreliable claim. Don't trust the dog around smaller pets as they may be chased and caught. Finally, this dog does make a good watch dog as it's alert and able.

Necessary Space: This is definitely not an apartment dog. It's best to own this dog if you've got a large home with lots of land. Perhaps even a farm. This dog needs to be exercised often and regularly and without the space in which to do so, this dog will become depressed, unhealthy and destructive.

Talents: The German Shorthaired Pointer was born to be a hunting dog and it's excellent at doing just that. This dog is full of energy and it only recommended for those who have the time and patience for the breed.

Life Expectancy: 12-18 years.

Group: Sporting Group.

A few terms and phrases to describe the typical German Shorthaired Pointer puppy and dog: highly trainable, great hunter, intelligent, sweet, loyal, affectionate, eager to please, athletic, great family companion, energetic, alert, protective and excellent watchdog.
