Rocky - Adorable Rat Shepherd Seeks Adults Only Home in Philadelphia
Rocky is a Rat Terrier/German Shepherd mix available for adoption in Philadelphia to an adults only home.
Rocky is a bone-a- fide hero! He once alerted his owner from a fire in the basement which, thankfully, was put out in time to keep it from spreading. This adorable and very unique mixed breed dog is a very intelligent, active and playful dog. He is a cross between German Shepherd and Rat Terrier (how that mixture came about is truly one of nature's great mysteries!) He'd make a great rat herding dog, but since there isn't much call for that pastime, he's content to be the apple of someone specials' eye!
Rocky weighs just 45 pounds. He is healthy, but does have some food allergies which require that he be given a special type of food. He is only 7 years old, up to date on his shots and has been neutered.Rocky needs lots of activity and exercise. He is being rehomed by his owner, who is heartbroken to have to do so. She loves Rocky dearly, however Rocky has shown some aggression towards her small children, and finding him a new home is an absolute must.Rocky would do best in an adults only home with active people who can give him the exercise and attention he craves. An owner with a firm hand to help Rocky reach his full potential as a calm, obedient companion would be fantastic for him. Rocky will bring his food and flea medications with him to his new home.
Rocky is a really great little dog who deserves a loving forever home where he will be safe, cherished and well cared for. If you have room in your heart and home for Rocky, please fill out our application form here: or call Debbie or Mark toll free at 888-9-PETS4U. There is a $75 adoption/rehoming fee, however this can be waived if needed.

Rocky is a very high energy dog. He's very playful and loves to be active. He is very protective of his family. Rocky can be stubborn and he doesn't follow commands the first time it is given to him. Rocky like to take charge. Rocky is good at alerting you if someone's at the door. He's friendly to people he knows and will greet you at the door. He is very loyal dog.
Rocky's Current Home Environment
Our environment consist of two small kids. It can be noisy sometimes with a preschooler and an infant. But where Rocky sleeps, it's quiet but I think he prefers to be involved with the family but I can't figure out how to incorporate him.
Rocky's Current Family:
We have two children, a three year old and a infant. We keep to ourselves mostly. My husband works, I stay home with the kids.
Rocky's Favorite Toys, Foods, Activities?
Rocky loves squeaky toys. He loves eating carrots. He loves to run after the ball (sometimes he'll bring it back if he feels like it) and he loves to go on long walks.
Cute Rocky Story:
It's not a funny story but Rocky saved my life by warning me about a fire starting in my basement. I heard him barking around 5 in the morning. I was asleep and didn't realize why Rocky was barking until I open my bedroom door and heard the fire alarm faintly in the basement. I ran downstairs to the basement where Rocky was and I saw a small blaze had formed in the door way of the laundry room. I quickly put the fire out but if it wasn't for Rocky alerting me about the fire, the damage to my house would probably be more significant. Rocky's a hero!
Why is Rocky Being Rehomed?
1. I first got him from the SPCA seven years ago, I was the only one giving him attention. I also had another dog living with us but Rocky always got the attention. Few years later, I got married and my husband and I started a family and now we can't give him the attention that he deserves.
2. I was a little nervous about keeping Rocky because he would always bark at little children. But last week there was an incident with my three year old that confirmed my feeling about Rocky and young children. My Mother in law step away for a moment to get my infant son when she heard Rocky growl and then my son started crying. When she came down, my sons face had a lot of blood because Rocky bite his face. I was told that my three year old was putting his food in the trash and possibly dropped it on the floor and Rocky got to it. Either my son was too close to his face and was trying to watch him eat or my son was trying to get the food away from Rocky and Rocky growl and bit my son on the forehead. I know that's a dogs instinct to bite when it comes to food but I can trust my son and Rocky together. Kids can be sneaky and find a way to the dog and this incident might happen again.
Rocky's Perfect Adoptive Home Will Be:
I'm looking for an owner who is also high energy like Rocky. A family or a outdoors person that would run/bike/walk him everyday. A family knows how to handle a dog that like to be the dominate figure. Maybe someone who train dogs and knows how to handle a dog like Rocky.
I believe Rocky can be a good dog to a family or person that is willing to take the time to train him. I never got the change to train him properly. He knows commands and if he found a person or family that he is confident in, I believe he can be a great family dog. I love Rocky and I hate to see him go but I have to think about my two small children. Rocky may not meant to hurt my son, I can't be certain it wouldn't happen again. I just want Rocky to be at a home where he can be happy and get the attention he deserves.
