Australian Shepherds for Sale & Adoption
Hands down, Australian Shepherds are awesome dogs. Those who have owned one or more know how integral a part of the family they can truly become. But not only that, these dogs are work horses. And interestingly enough, they're not originally from Australia. They were first bred in the U.S. This breed has tons of energy and is very intelligent and that's what enticed ranchers to take advantage of them for herding uses way back when. Beyond herding though, Australian Shepherds are widely used for search and rescue and engage in agility competition. If you see an Aussie once, you'll likely not forget it. They're somewhat unique with their merle colored fur and their distinctive bright eyes. These dogs are of medium size, extremely loyal, and make incredible companions to millions of families around the world.

Popularity: Quite popular.
Trainability: Highly intelligent (quite possibly the most intelligent of all dog breeds) and very trainable for work or sport. Needs consistent and fair training or will get bored and into mischief.
Size/Weight: Medium sized dogs, weighing in at an average of 35-70 pounds (female to male).
Origin Location/Date: The Australian Shepherd wasn't actually first bred in Australia. It stems from the American West. Although the origins of this dog aren't precisely known, the Australian Shepherd Club of America was officially established in 1957.
Energy Level: Excessively high energy, playful and affectionate, requires abundant exercise every day in the form of a good long multi-hour walk, run or rigorous play time. Also requires mental stimulation. This working dog likes to work. Not the perfect dog for everyone because of the exercise requirements.
Temperament: If not trained properly early on, these dogs can have a tendency to nip. Otherwise, the breed is excellent with children, friendly and affectionate. Can become an excellent watchdog, but is far too friendly to be a guard dog. While it loves to be around people, it can handle being alone.
Necessary Space: This dog requires lots of exercise. It will likely take all you can give it due to its breeding for running across large fields and great distances. It's tolerance for exercise is great, so you'll need to make sure you can keep up with it. Be warned though that if not trained properly early on, this dog may attempt to herd your children or other pets. Due to the fairly substantial exercise requirements for this dog, it's best to keep them in larger, more spacious living situations such as a farm or a large house with a yard. Not particularly well suited for small apartments. Needs as much walking, running or playtime as you can handle per day.
Talents: If you are an avid runner and are looking for a running partner, this is the dog you want. It's cute, curious and mischievous and can be a wonderful companion to those who love exercise. Great for farmers who need a herding dog.
Life Expectancy: 12-15 years.
Group: Herding group.
