Pembroke Welsh Corgis are really cool dogs. They're low to the ground and have rather short legs, but they sure can get up and go. Believe it or not, these dogs were originally bred as herding dogs. They've got lots of energy, so if you buy or adopt one of these, you'll need to be sure to exercise him or her every day. The Corgi is also super smart, which makes training so much easier. You can actually train this dog to do lots of neat tricks. They're great family dogs that behave well around children and they just love being around and pleasing their families.

Continue reading to learn more about Pembroke Welsh Corgis, low to the ground, lovable, and devoted. Also known as just Corgis.

Popularity: Extremely popular.

Trainability: Corgis are super smart, so training them isn't really a problem at all. They're quite interested in learning new things and they easily understand what you're trying to convey. This breed is very good at learning about canine sports as well. Of course, socialize and begin training early on in puppyhood, as with any other dog.

Size/Weight: Small to medium sized dogs, weighing in at an average of 25-30 pounds.

Origin Location/Date: The Pembroke Welsh Corgi goes all the way back to the ninth century Wales where the breed was used to herd sheep, ducks, horses, and cattle. This breed is one of the original herding dogs in history. In 1934, the American Kennel Club recognized the Pembroke Welsh Corgi as a breed and the dog's popularity has continued to grow through the decades.

Energy Level: The Pembroke is an active dog and is happiest when it's got something to do. This isn't a dog that enjoys sitting around all day. After all, it was originally bred to herd livestock, so it's used to running around all day. The Corgi requires regular exercise for both physical and mental stimulation. It's important to take this dog on daily walks or slow jogs, but be sure not to try to bring it on a bicycle ride. Its legs are far too short for that. Also, this breed excels at dog sports, so that's something to consider as well.

Temperament: Corgis are generally good natured dogs. They're relatively easy to train and they get along well with other household pets. They're happy, loyal and devoted. You'll need to watch out for a bit of a domineering, stubborn, and independent personality at times though. Good training should curb any unwarranted behaviors. These dogs are also smart and companionable. Just be sure to socialize them early.

Necessary Space: Although this dog is fairly small, you may want to reconsider it when it comes to living in an apartment. It has a tendency to bark at things it's unfamiliar with and it's quite energetic. It can live comfortably in a smaller area if it's exercised frequently and regularly.

Talents: The Corgi's claim to fame is in its herding abilities. This dog also responds very well to training and is a wonderful watch dog. It's a very loyal and loving dog.

Life Expectancy: 12-13 years.

Group: Herding Group.

A few terms and phrases to describe the typical Pembroke Welsh Corgi puppy and dog: lovable, devoted, strong, athletic, happy, loyal, tough, good with kids, good with families, can be domineering, problem solvers, can be stubborn, independent, good watchdogs, good with other animals, companionable, energetic, brave, intelligent, alert, bright, sensitive, and self-confident.
