American Eskimos for Sale & Adoption

Folks adore the American Eskimo Dog. This breed is oftentimes referred to as the Eskie and it's got a long and rich history of entertaining as well as adapting to both small apartments as well as larger homes. Eskies don't actually have anything to do with Eskimos or America, as they were introduced by Europeans in the early 20th century. They were initially used to perform in circuses and then sold as furry friends thereafter. These dogs are widely recognized and appreciated for their playfulness, agility, wonderful brain function (intelligence), as well as their ability to meld into the family unit. You can find American Eskimo Dogs in three sizes; toy, miniature, and standard.

Continue reading to learn more about American Eskimo Dogs, a good looking, quick and clever minded breed. This breed is nicknamed the Eskie and comes in three sizes, the Toy, Miniature and Standard.

Popularity: Not very popular.

Trainability: If there's one circus dog out there that loves to do tricks, it's the Eskie. These dogs are easy to train, are eager to please, and are highly intelligent. The one area you'll need to be careful with is who's in charge. Because this dog is so quick-witted, it'll sense when you're not exactly in control and will attempt to take that roll. You'll need to stay dominant, yet gentle and patient. Use positive reinforcement when training the American Eskimo Dog and use treats for a job well done. When obedience training is completed during puppyhood, continue on with the training to keep the dog stimulated.

Size/Weight: Small to Medium sized dogs, weighing in at an average of 6-35 pounds.

Origin Location/Date: This breed is a combination of a few others and was first created in Europe and then the United States during the 1800s. Originally named the American Spitz, this breed was later renamed the American Eskimo Dog. The American Eskimo Dog Club was established in 1985 and the breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1995.

Energy Level: The Eskie is a high energy dog and as such, it'll need a lot of exercise. Long daily walks and runs are great as is playing with the dog in the back yard or park. If this breed doesn't get enough exercise, it'll become destructive and may tear up your furniture as a result.

Temperament: The American Eskimo Dog is generally family friendly and an affectionate dog. It's quite sociable and good with kids, although it'll bark at strangers. It won't become aggressive with strangers though. It's also good with other dogs and household pets, such as cats.

Necessary Space: While the Toy version of this dog may be fine for apartment living, the larger sizes certainly aren't. These dogs are high strung and will need to be exercised outside often. A large home with a large back yard or park close by is ideal.

Talents: This breed is primarily known for its white coat, but also for its trainability. It's not difficult to turn an Eskie into a circus-like dog to show off to friends and family.

Life Expectancy: 13-15 years.

Group: Non-Sporting Group.

A few terms and phrases to describe the typical American Eskimo Dog puppy and dog: quick witted, clever, beautiful, good watchdog, loyal, gentle, alert, friendly, playful, adorable, white, fluffy, healthy, adaptable, likes to bark, sheds, and not good with small children.
