German Shepherds for Sale & Adoption

German Shepherds are incredibly awesome dogs and puppies and have been long viewed as an all-around exceptionally intelligent and far ranging breed, as it pertains to versatility and skill set. The German Shepherd Dog is definitely considered one of the most kept and bred dogs in the United States today. It tops the AKC popularity list not only in the U.S., but it also ranks very well globally. This breed of dog is bred for its hard-working attributes as well as its strength, endurance, and cleverness. All around the world, various militaries and police forces take advantage of the German Shepherd, with training beginning in puppyhood and then continuing on into adulthood. Puppies learn quickly and as they mature, the adolescents become remarkably brave. These just may be the perfect dogs for public safety as well as combat uses. As far as pets go, these dogs are well geared to be part of just about any family. They're extremely devoted and are well suited for both individuals as well as families. The German Shepherd is a protective dog, so be sure to keep that in mind when there are strangers around. Also, this breed needs lots of mental and physical stimulation. It's highly intelligent and requires lots of exercise. So they don't get bored, keep your puppy or dog busy with various tasks and work. They're happiest when busy. Finally, these are large dogs, so when shopping to buy one that's for sale or adoption, whether it be from a private breeder or a larger seller, be sure you've got the room for it at home. As far as types of German Shepherds go, we've got many of them listed right here. They are Saddle Back, Solid Color (Black, White), Panda and Sable (Black and Tan).

Continue reading to learn more about German Shepherds, otherwise known as "GSDs."

Popularity: Exceptionally popular.

Trainability: The German Shepherd is one of the most intelligent dogs alive and being so, it's highly trainable. While we've all seen the badly behaved GSD out there in our neighborhoods, those bad dogs aren't indicative of the breed. Sometimes with only a few repetitions, this breed will learn a new command. When training the German Shepherd, always use positive reinforcement as opposed to punishment. The response from the dog will be much more productive and the training will be more fruitful.

Size/Weight: Large sized dogs, weighing in at an average of 50-90 pounds.

Origin Location/Date: It's commonly claimed that the German Shepherd's overwhelming popularity in the United States stemmed from its role in the movie Rin Tin Tin. While that may be true for its popularity here in the U.S., this breed was well-known years earlier overseas. Known as the GSD and for its role as a police dog in many countries, the German Shepherd was first bred in Germany in the late 1800s. After a few ups and downs with its appeal, mostly due to opinions having to do with world wars, the rise of the German Shepherd took hold globally and is still with us today. As a matter of fact, in 2020 in the U.S., this breed is the second most popular, right behind the Labrador Retriever.

Energy Level: Please do not doubt that this dog is high energy. It is very high energy. It's smart and energetic and it needs a lot of exercise. not only does he need exercise to stay physically fit, he also needs it to stay mentally fit. Being as smart as he is, the German Shepherd needs to maintain a level of mental stimulation to stay happy. A GSD that's bored is one that finds trouble and develops bad habits, such as destructive, dangerous and annoying behavior. The GSD loves going for long walks and playing in the fenced in back yard. Don't lose sight of this dog though because even trained, it might take off on you to find more trouble. Mental stimulation activities include agility, tracking and herding as well as swimming and diving. This is a great dog to own for the right owner.

Temperament: The German Shepherd is a lot of dog, even for dog people who have experience. It's a very direct breed that's fearless and confident. When bred correctly and socialized well from an young age, this is a great dog to own. It's an easy breed to train and it's very protective, loyal and devoted. It's also a very good watch dog and guard dog. In general, this is a wonderful family dog that's also good around other pets. The best way for them to learn is to introduce them to a variety of animals and circumstances when they're young. This way, they'll grow into their atmosphere. Keep in mind that the German Shepherd is a working dog. It needs things to do. While they're friendly and loving around those they know and admire, they'll also need things to keep them busy, such as random tasks to keep their minds sharp. Think various types of training and activities. One of the greatest issues facing the German Shepherd today is lack of training by people who shouldn't own the breed.

Necessary Space: Because this is a large and energetic dog, it needs space to live. Even in a moderate sized house, you'll soon discover that living with a German Shepherd can quickly become tight. This breed does best in larger living spaces with some property upon which to exercise.

Talents: The GSD has a wide variety of talents, including, but not limited to herding, police and military work, guiding and assisting, being a rescue dog as well as a detector dog. It's a breed that truly excels at many canine sports and activities and is wonderful when it comes to working on farms and ranches. It's also a highly talented watch and guard dog.

Life Expectancy: 7-10 years.

Group: Herding Group.

A few terms and phrases to describe the typical German Shepherd puppy and dog: intelligent, loyal, obedient, brave, protective, strong, fearless, poignant, devoted, companionable, great watch dog, great guard dog, versatile, confident, courageous, smart, good with kids and good with other pets.
