Dogue de Bordeaux for Sale & Adoption

Stemming from a tumultuous history of fighting, acting as a guard dog, and hunting, the French Dogue de Bordeaux is a complete sweetheart today. This is a very large and gentle breed that's wonderful when kept as a family pet. This breed is strong and powerful, yet affectionate and pleasant to be around. The best part is, it doesn't require tons of exercise, so only moderate play is necessary. These dogs are good with kids and families, good natured, and are eager to please their master.

Continue reading to learn more about Dogue de Bordeaux, otherwise known as the gentle giant, DDB, French Mastiff or the Bordeaux Bulldog (from Turner and Hooch).

Popularity: Somewhat popular.

Trainability: Early socialization and training are critical with a dog this size. The Dogue de Bordeaux can reach up to 145 pounds and this isn't a dog that you want being suspicious of strangers or pulling you around while on a leash. When training, you'll need to use calm and firm leadership to set up clear boundaries between you and the puppy. There will be a dominance hierarchy battle at play, so it's important that you come out as the master, lest the dog will take that roll and that's not something you want. Be sure that the puppy grows up comfortable around other people and other animals. Just be sure not to use a heavy handed approach while training this sensitive animal. Trust building is essential.

Size/Weight: Large sized dogs, weighing in at an average of 110+ pounds.

Origin Location/Date: Believe it or not, the Dogue de Bordeaux is a close relative of a few different Mastiffs, such as the Mastiff, Bullmastiff and the Neapolitan Mastiff. They've been around for at least 600 years in France and were used as hunters, guard dogs, butchers' dogs and farm dogs. Folks tend to call this breed the DDB, but they're also known as the French Mastiff and the Bordeaux dog. This breed was first brought to the United States in the late 1950s and became much more popular after it was seen in the movie "Turner and Hooch." The Dogue de Bordeaux was recognized as a breed by the AKC in 2008.

Energy Level: This breed is fairly low energy and has a calm demeanor. While it will need exercise to stay fit, you'll want to be careful which exercise you let it engage in. During puppyhood, only allow this dog to participate in low-impact exercise as to not strain its young bones and joints. When the dog gets older, don't allow it to jump off of things that are higher than three feet. While this is a powerful breed that can pull carts and trailers, it's suggested that it get its exercise by swimming because of its low impact nature.

Temperament: The Dogue de Bordeaux is a great dog to own, but it's certainly not one for the first time dog owner or the owner who won't be around a lot. It's a hands on dog that's loving and devoted, yet stubborn and strong-willed. To keep this dog personable and friendly to others, it will need extensive socialization and training, lest it may become aggressive and almost impossible to handle by someone who isn't experienced with larger dogs like this. If raised properly, this breed can be loyal and affectionate, patient and calm. They can be great with kids and families and generally sweet-natured.

Necessary Space: Due to it's large size, this dog isn't particularly well suited for apartment living. A house with a back yard would be much better. Also, daily walks are imperative for exercise and mental well being. Any pent up energy might be directed towards the humans in the house and it's much more practical to tire this dog out via exercise on a regular basis.

Talents: The Dogue de Bordeaux is fearless and proud and makes an excellent watch and guard dog. This dog is very loyal to its family and gentle with children. It does have a tendency to snore and drool though, so watch out.

Life Expectancy: 5-8 years.

Group: Working Group.

A few terms and phrases to describe the typical Dogue de Bordeaux puppy and dog: calm, gentle, stubborn, drools, companionable, show dog, aloof, comical, vigilant, courageous, loving, devoted, great with families and great with kids.
