Although he was classified as a Miniature Pinscher when we bought him three and one half years ago, Dylan weighs a healthy 20 pounds, and that makes him a Manchester Terrier instead. He doesn't have AKC registration, never came with papers when we purchased him. Dylan is a special-needs dog, and has thrived under our care despite having congenital megaesophagus. Megaesophagus is a disease of unknown cause, genetic in young dogs, in which the esophagus cannot allow for peristalsis to happen. The esophagus loses muscle tone, causing regurgitation. Dylan is fed 3 times a day with dry food, in a baffled bowl (the kind that prevents canine bloat) and in elevated dishes (almost at head level) so the food slides down his esophagus and stays in his stomach. He also has a special water dish that helps prevent him from gobbling too much water at one time and regurgitating it. It is important that the "special person" that adopts this loving, friendly dog to know the feeding and watering schedule so it avoids unnecessary regurgitation, and aspiration of food or water into his lungs. Dogs like Dylan are usually dead by age two, because of aspiration pneumonia or starvation, but in his case we discovered the megaesophagus early on, and were able to modify his eating pattern. He is a survivor
It is best that he go to a home where there are children over the age of 8, because he loves kids. He gets along with cats and dogs, is friendly and very affectionate. If outside, he needs a fenced yard, because he can escape and run around the neighborhood. He loves to play and be brushed but is terrified of baths, When he sleeps, he loves to cover himself with a blanket. He is a wonderful dog, that we love very much. If you can see it in your heart that this is the dog for you, please adopt him and make him your forever friend. Up to date on all of his shots, including rabies and distemper, and is neutered.
