PLEASE HELP SAVE FRIENDLY LAB/TERRIER MIX "ELVIS" FROM BEING
Please foward this to everyone you know, especially those in nassau county and the town of hemstead.
FRIENDLY, Black/brown lab/terrier mix, about 50 pounds and one to two years old, neutered male. He has been at the Town of Hempstead animal shelter since september 20, and now his days are numbered. He had been sitting in the shelter for about six weeks and no one has shown any interest in him. The shelter called me on monday to tell me that he is on the list to be destroyed since he has been sitting there for so long and they have I think 115 dogs in the shelter. I would love to rescue this dog myself, but i already have 3 large dogs in a pretty small house and property, and i cant possibly handle or afford another dog.
I Found "Elvis" in Baldwin in the Associated shopping center on sept. 19. He was walking in and out of the stores in the shopping center looking for something, maybe his owner. But peolpe were frighted. I had a bone with me and called him over and he ran to me with his tail wagging and was very friendly, but showed no interest in the bone, so i dont hink he was starving. He was also very muscular. He had a broken metal chain around his neck, but no collar. He was an unneutered male, now he has been neutered by the shelter. I put him into my car and took him home. I posted signs, listed him on craigs list, and took him to the vet to see if he was microchipped without success. I kept him in my house overnight and he did well in the crate. It was very stressful to keep him separated from my 3 dogs. I tried to keep him out in my yard for a while, but in seconds he climbed my fence and was barking at my front door. I tried walking around the neighborhood that I thought he came from with hopes that someone might recognize him or he may lead me to his home, but that didnt work either. I had to leave for work and had no safe place to keep him, so I unfortunetly had to bring him to the shelter who assured me that he wouldnt be destroyed unless he bit someone or became severely ill. Well now their story changes, and he has "been there too long." They say that it is not humane to keep him in the shelter for years, which i agree with, but he is a healthy, friendly dog who does not deserve to end his life because he got lost. Please help save him, or foster him, spread the word.
I just found out that the key rescue groups that go into the town of hempstead animal shelter, have been banned for the past two weeks. I called the Kate Murray help line to complain and to ask them to let the rescue groups back in, but they tell me the groups are under investigation. I dont know what the rescue group did, but I cant imagine them doing something to harm the animals, and now the animals are paying the price. Less rescue help means more animals in the shelter that only has room for a certain umber of animals, so now more animals with have to be because they have less time to be adopted. For more information please go to www.helpforhempsteadshelter.com and sign the petition. Call the kate murray helpline and complain 516-489-5000. Our taxes pay 7.1 MILLION to the shelter a year to take care of these animals, and they should be living like royalty, not being .
If interested in "ELVIS" please call or go to the shelter mon-sat 9-4:45pm.
