Here are some valid reasons why you should not declaw your pet cat.
1. First and foremost, it is a very painful procedure regardless of what your vet says. Cats typically do not complain, but rather get quiet and become withdrawn when they are in pain.
2. According to animal shelters I have spoken with, declawed cats personalities go through changes. I had one cat declawed and he went from being a friendly cat to being reserved and didn't act like a normal cat. I have had other cats before him and others after he was gone.
3. If your cat bolts out the door and it is declawed, it has lost a major part of its defense against predators which in itself should be reason enough.
If you are concerned about cats sharpening their claws, there are many options available in pet stores and with your own imagination.
1. Buy a 1' x 1" piece of 5/8" plywood, two three foot 2" x 4" and attach the 2x4s to the plywood with some flush lag bolts on the bottom, get some hemp rope and beginning at the bottom, wind it around the 2x4s until you reach the top then secure it with a nail or screw.
2. There are inexpensive cardboard scratching ramps you can get on line and through most pet stores. These stores also sell a non offensive to human spray that will convince your cat to not scratch the furniture.
Cats typically live around 15-18 years when taken care of and you want your cat to be as feline as you can get. Let's give them a fighting chance in a cruel enough world without subjecting them to a torturous procedure. Spend the time training instead of paining a cat.
